Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche

Founder, Ligmincha Institute

Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is a highly respected teacher and lineage holder of the ancient Bön tradition, the indigenous spiritual tradition of Tibet. Born in Amritsar, India, in 1961 after his family fled the Chinese invasion of Tibet, Rinpoche was recognized at the age of eleven as the reincarnation of Khyung Tul Rinpoche, a renowned Bön master. From a young age, he trained under some of the most esteemed teachers of the Bön and Buddhist traditions and later received his Geshe degree from the Bönpo Monastic Center in Dolanji, India.

In 1991, Rinpoche was invited to the United States as a visiting scholar at Rice University in Houston, Texas. This marked the beginning of his lifelong mission to bring the profound teachings of the Bön tradition to Western audiences. In 1992, he founded Ligmincha Institute (now Ligmincha International) in Charlottesville, Virginia, as a center dedicated to preserving and sharing the wisdom of Bön. Since then, Ligmincha has grown into a global network with centers and students in over 20 countries.

Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is renowned for his ability to communicate complex spiritual teachings with clarity, practicality, and warmth. His teachings encompass a wide range of Tibetan yogic and meditative practices—including Dzogchen (the Great Perfection), dream yoga, lucid dreaming, sleep yoga, tummo (inner heat yoga), and soul retrieval. He is also a pioneer in bridging Tibetan contemplative wisdom with modern fields such as neuroscience, psychology, and integrative medicine.

As an author, Rinpoche has published numerous influential books, including The Tibetan Yogas of Dream and Sleep, Healing with Form, Energy and Light, Awakening the Sacred Body, The True Source of Healing, Spontaneous Creativity, and The Tibetan Sound Healing. His books and teachings have been translated into multiple languages and have helped introduce the Bön tradition to thousands of students worldwide.

Beyond traditional teaching, Tenzin Wangyal Rinpoche is a forerunner in offering free online teachings, retreats, and workshops through his CyberSangha® platform—making ancient wisdom accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world. He is also active in interfaith dialogue and regularly collaborates with scientists and scholars to explore the intersections between spiritual practice and cognitive science.
